How it all began...

The international airport is located in the idealistic location of Montego Bay which has long been considered the home to the wealthy. It has also been one of the most popular vacation spot in the Caribbean for tourists. The plan for an airport in Montego Bay was first made in 1940. Construction of the entire facility was completed on February 18, 1947. Pan American Airways was the first international airline to fly into the Montego Bay Airport. In fact, Pan American Airways operated the Montego Bay Company up until September 30, 1939 in where after that time the Jamaican Government gained control of the airport.

A major difference from the Sangster International Airport in the past to today is the terminal buildings once on the northern side of the runway has now been shifted to the southern side. Other minor upgrades to the Sangster International Airport were made to make the flow of air traffic smoother including the addition of a new terminal in 1955. The new terminal located on the southern side of the runway was officially opened on July 7, 1959 with the capacity to accommodate 500 passengers per hour and parking for up to seven aircrafts. By 2004, the Sangster International Airport was handling up to 5.6 million passengers. Starting in 2000, plans of expanding the Sangster International Airport were set, including a new concourse which would allow larger commercial aircrafts such as the Airbus A340 and Boeing 747-400. Further in the future, plans are being made for a 10 000 ft. runway which would accommodate large aircraft traffic. With the new upgrades for better passenger convenience, you definitely want to come choose Sangster International Airport when with your Jamaica car rental company, Danjo Car Rentals.
